All About So You Think You Can Dance
For anybody who has not seen So You Think You Can Dance, it works much like American Idol (probably because SYTYCD was created by the same people who produced it). They have a first round of auditions that are open to anyone of age which is usually between 18 and 30. People who make it through the first auditions will receive a ticket to Vegas where they will try-out a second time to try to make it onto the show. During this second week, the dancers go through a grueling process of testing their strengths in all area of dance. According to Wikipedia, "Vegas Week is often portrayed as one of the most exhausting and stressful stages of the competition".
If a dancer makes it through "Vegas Week" they then become a part of the show. During the competition they will be competing in solo, partner, and group numbers in which they will perform multiple styles of dance throughout the season. Each cut is voted on by viewers, again, this setup is much like that of American Idol. From this point, they will do two shows a week. The first show is dedicated to performances and the second is the elimination round.
Each week, contestants will randomly draw a dance style and then choreographers will teach them a dance to perform for the next show. Some well known choreographers for the show are Travis Wall, Wade Robson, Charles Klapow, and Sonya Tayeh. The dance styles include: Classical, Street and Club, Ballroom, Jazz, Broadway and Musical Theater, American Social, and Regional/ Traditional styles. Competitors must be extremely versatile and talented in all areas of dancing to even stand a chance in this competition.
